Autism Project – An informative Toronto Star feature series on autism

Autism Project - Toronto Star

The Toronto Star is featuring a great series, called the “Autism Project” that focuses on the lives of children and families with autism.

The Autism Project is a multi-media effort by Toronto Star reporters, photographers and videographers – in print, online and social media – to document autistic lives in all their many stages. Our journalists have uncovered an alarming array of policy omissions and holes in social services. We will pursue them with the vigour expected of Canada’s largest and most progressive newspaper, in hopes this project will improve the lives of autistic children, and the families who care for them. There are some wonderful videos that were created as part of this project, including one that features a student using Proloquo2Go at the Beverley School in Toronto. Two of their teachers just won the Prime Minster’s Teaching Award for their use of iPads in their classrooms. Have a look at the video they created on the project below (they may take a few seconds to load):

Another great video is about Streetsville Secondary’s Room 150, a safe space for teens with autism.

Another autism-related worthwhile read: Here is a post written by Canadian Senator Jim Munson on a national strategy for autism. Senator Munson was the Parliamentarian who initiated the 2007 report “Pay now or Pay Later” by the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology. This report outlines the implications and impact of ASDs on Canadian society.
